Hello and Welcome!

Red House Books is going through a bit of a update!

I've always had a pretty clear vision of what I wanted this space to be but I've been detoured from my path by...lots and lost of other people's opinions and ways of doing things...

I'm committed to this little chunk of the interweb but I've also branched out into other places so! Now it's time to think of Red House Books as more of a hub of all things me! And Me is a hell of a lot of book love!

Stay tuned!

Cover Reveal: Evergreen (Mer Tales #2) by Brenda Pandos

Book 2 or the Mer Tales series comes out in June and Brenda was kind enough to share her cover :)
I happen to love it!

Evergreen (Mer Tales #2) by Brenda Pandos
June 29, 2012 from Obsidian Mountain Publishing

A kingdom on the brink of war.
A king on the fringes of insanity.
A family running for their lives.
Ash and Fin’s only desire is to be together and dive into their happily ever after, though their conflicting worlds work to pull them apart. Neither is ready to convert to the other’s life: become a human or a mer. Little do they know that somewhere in Natatoria a secret holds the fine fabric of everyone’s lives together. If the truth is discovered, Ash and Fin will no longer have the luxury of waiting. They’ll be forced to choose. But will it be for loyalty or love? Or will someone else make the choice for them if they can’t decide?
Enter the watery world of treachery, greed, and the binding mer kiss as the story continues with Evergreen, book two of Mer Tales. (from Goodreads)

In My Mailbox - February 4, 2012

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren :)

Only a few books for me this week, which is good because I recently did this:

That's about 75% of all the books in the house - about 90% of all my young adult books.
All on my dinning room table. You can't see it but there is an extra brace under the table holding the middle up!
Don't ask what possessed me to organize almost every bookcase in the house last weekend but well, yeah, I did!

Anyone have some extra money to donate to the Emily-has-a-problem-that-can-be-solved-by-adding-an-addition-to-her-house-for-a-home-library Fund? No? Worth a shot ;)

Anyway!

Here is what I got this week:
(links are to Goodreads)
(sorry for the slightly blurry pic!)

For Review
Concealed by Sang Kromah
Why? I accepted this one for review because it really sounded interesting. Here's a quote from the prologue - I'm hooked already! "This is the story of how my quest to be normal proved I was anything but. This is the story of how one wish changed it all. This is the story of how I fell in love with the faceless boy from my dreams. This is the story of how I died."

Bookmooch
Slide by Jill Hathaway ARC
Why? A 2012 debut! Paranormal story that sounds kind of like Lisa McMann's Dream Catcher's series.

Fracture by Megan Miranda ARC
Why? I didn't know this was an ARC when I mooched it - I already have an ARC and was looking for a finished copy as I really enjoyed this story. I'll be giving this one away soon :)

Illuminate by Aimee Agresti ARC
Why? Another 2012 debut! I'm so happy to have a snagged a copy of this one! Bookmooch really pulled through for me this week :)

So, what's in your mailbox? I'm not around today but leave a link and I'll stop by tomorrow :)
Happy Reading everyone!

Book Review: The Butterfly Clues by Kate Ellison

***2012 Debut Author***
Reading Level: Young Adult
Publication Date: February 2012
Publisher: EgmontUSA
Pages: 336
Series: no
Acquisition: NetGalley

Summary:
Penelope (Lo) Marin has always loved to collect beautiful things. Her dad's consulting job means she's grown up moving from one rundown city to the next, and she's learned to cope by collecting (sometimes even stealing) quirky trinkets and souvenirs in each new place--possessions that allow her to feel at least some semblance of home.
But in the year since her brother Oren's death, Lo's hoarding has blossomed into a full-blown, potentially dangerous obsession. She discovers a beautiful, antique butterfly pendant during a routine scour at a weekend flea market, and recognizes it as having been stolen from the home of a recently murdered girl known only as "Sapphire"--a girl just a few years older than Lo. As usual when Lo begins to obsess over something, she can't get the murder out of her mind.
As she attempts to piece together the mysterious "butterfly clues," with the unlikely help of a street artist named Flynt, Lo quickly finds herself caught up in a seedy, violent underworld much closer to home than she ever imagined--a world, she'll ultimately discover, that could hold the key to her brother's tragic death. (from Goodreads)

I was: blown away by the power behind Lo's story.

My thoughts:
The Butterfly Clues is a book that I will always remember for one important reason as Lo is unlike any heroine I have ever read. Although it's never identified with any definite terms, it's pretty obvious that she suffers from an extreme case of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). She is almost crippled by it. She taps her legs, her shoulder, her shoes, the floor in groupings of numbers that make sense to her. 4s are bad, 3s are good, 9s are even better. Even raw fear can't stop her from her compulsions. These things that she needs to do, including hoarding and arranging groupings of objects, consume her life.

An entire book could easily be written about Lo alone. Her compulsions, her needs, her struggles. However, The Butterfly Clues is much more then a book about a girl in need of help. Maybe because of her OCD, maybe it would have happened anyway but Lo finds herself in a world where the rules don't apply. A world where she makes a connection to a murdered girl and finds a friend she never thought she could have. Her family is draw into the drama and her life can never be the same afterwards.

The Butterfly Clues was a powerful read for me. I so very much wanted Lo to find herself. To find her answers and to finally realize that she wasn't a freak. She's a character that I dare you not to fall for - not to root for.

Final verdict:
The overpowering mystery of this book still haunts me a little. The things Lo does to seek the truth. The lengths that people will go to hide the things they have done. It's all so raw and real and a little disturbing and I loved every word of it.
